Río Grande
It’s an obvious suggestion as it’s the biggest and mightiest river in New Mexico. The gorge offers more than 70 miles of public water for you to fish in. However, much of the river is inaccessible or unsuitable for anglers. There are plenty of spots ideal for casting, such as near the town of Pilar. The Rio Grande can also be a challenging river to fish for trout. Consider hiring a fly fishing guide to help navigate the area to increase your chances of success.
Rio Hondo
The northern part of the Rio Hondo is excellent for fly fishing. The upper section of this river runs fast in the Taos Ski Valley. You can expect to catch cutthroat, brown, and rainbow trout. A portion of the Rio Hondo follows NM-150 into Taos Ski Valley. The Rio Hondo flows into the Rio Grande, and it’s a good place to catch some big fish before they enter the Rio Grande; however, it’s a hard area to navigate.
